Financial inclusion, sustainability and efficiency of microfinance institutions : A global evidence

Related Document
Frame of Image ce of microfinance and its expansion to over 120 countries is crucial to the upliftment of commercially excluded people and promote financial inclusion (Haque, Kot, & Imran, 2019).
Introduction Cont.
• Attaining financial sustainability of microfinance institutions (MFIs) became a theme among the stakeholders in recent years (Mia & Lee, 2017; Serrano-Cinca, Gutiérrez-Nieto, & Reyes, 2016). • Financially sustainable MFIs can alleviate poverty, and outreach to unbanked population faster than the inefficient ones via the spillover effect (Shankar, 2007). • Efficiency in operations could be one of the successful ways to achieve sustainability/outreach for microfinance institutions (MFIs) (Balkenhol, 2007).
Why efficiency is needed for MFIs?
• Uninterrupted flow of financial services to the masses (Ullah, Khawaja & Iqbal, 2019). • Stakeholders now require MFIs to be self-sustainable and operate without donations or concessionary funds. • Ensuring resource efficiency will facilitate achievement of the intended dual objectives of MFIs
What is efficiency?
“Efficiency in microfinance refers to the ability of MFIs to transform inputs into outputs by either maximizing outputs with given inputs or minimizing inputs with given outputs (Balkenhol, 2007).”
Methodology
How to measure efficiency?
• Ratio analysis • Parametric technique: Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) • Non-parametric technique: Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA); • Both methods having their advantages and disadvantages.
