Dear CoP members,
The fear of grain crisis is a worldwide concern. Historically, the cycle of the global grain crisis was between 7 years and 10 years. However, because of the impacts of climate change, it is now expected to occur more frequently, at intervals between 1 and 3 years. The Korea Rural Economic Institute anticipates that, based on current climate change projections, the rice self-sufficiency of Korea would drop from 83.1% in 2010 to 47.3% in 2050, indicating an increased likelihood of rice shortage in Korea. While the dependence of agriculture on climate is easily apparent, recently many studies have highlighted just how sensitive our systems are to climactic change. One such study showed that recent climate variabilities in temperature, precipitation, or their interaction account for roughly a third of global crop yield variability.
