Since an official diplomatic relation was established in 1992, bilateral economic activities between Korea and Vietnam have rapidly increased in most industrial sectors such as culture as well as trade, investment. Vietnam became Korea’s 6th largest export destination following China, U.S.A., Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore in 2012. Korea became Vietnam’s 4th biggest investor following Japan, Taiwan and Singapore in April 2013. There are nearly 62,000 Vietnamese workers in Korea at the end of 2012. In terms of the number of foreign workers in Korea, the number of Vietnamese workers is 2nd largest following that of Chinese workers. Korea and Vietnam can take a further action to address key policy challenges in order to strengthen bilateral industrial cooperation in investment, production network and exchange of skilled labor. In addition, Korea’s official development assistance (ODA) in the development of vocational training in Vietnam needs to be revisited in light of the main policy challenges ahead. This conference will provide an opportunity to discuss industrial cooperation and key policy challenges between Korea and Vietnam to make a step forward for the future of the two countries.
