Title

[Workshop] Frontiers in Development Policy: Workshop on Innovative Development Case Studies

Type Workshop
Venue Yeong Bin Gwan/Marronnier Hall, Maple Hall, Lilac Hall (3F), Hotel Shilla Seoul, Seoul, Republic of Korea Date 2013-11-21 ~ 2013-11-22
Host KDI School, The World Bank Institute Organizer

Purpose

While there are no clear “one-size-fits-all” development theories and strategies, policymakers continue to seek insight and inspiration from other countries’ experiences and have achieved a demonstrated track record of success in doing so. Against this backdrop, “Frontiers in Development Policy: Workshop on Innovative Development Case Studies” will introduce innovative case studies that showcase the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ in identifying a development problem, formulating and implementing policies and programs, as well as provide an opportunity for active discourse on outcomes in interaction with world-class experts. This will help policymakers in developing countries better understand the best practices of development policies and equip them with insight for assessing their own development strategies and experiences.

These country case studies can be classified into three major categories: Economic Development: Industrial and Financial Policy; Human Development: Education and Health Policy; and Community-Driven Development: Regional and Environmental Policy.

After the keynote speech on the Development Economics through the Decades by Mr. Shahid Yusuf, the participants will be divided into three groups for in-depth discussion with other development practitioners and experts. Upon completion of the group discussion on the first day, all participants will be exposed to the other remaining categories of the country case studies through presentations of the contents discussed and lessons learned by each group in the plenary session on the second day.

The result of this participant-driven workshop will be published as a Case Study Book to provide practical guidance for policy making communities in developing countries and teaching-learning materials for educational institutions. Comments drawn from the participants will enrich the Book’s contents.
