Development Knowledge Sharing and Capacity Building Workshop
「Partnership with Central Asia」

This workshop is designed specifically to share Korea’s development strategies and experiences with high and middle level officials, researchers, and managers of the governments and research institutes of Central Asia (Republic of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan). Through this sharing of Korea’s development strategies and experiences, the participants are expected to enhance their understanding of background knowledge, analytical framework, and insights necessary to develop and work with policies relevant to efficient economic growth and social development in general and in particular in Central Asia. The workshop will provide participants with an understanding of basic development issues and relevant policies in Korea  and help participants to think about how to make the lessons learned from the program applicable to their own countries. Prominent academics and practitioners will present and discuss core issues and policies related to Korea’s economic development. In addition, the delegation will participate in useful discussions with development experts and managers at major development project sites during the field trip.

This workshop is also an important instrument to help implement the foreign and economic policies of the new government that took office at the  beginning of this year. The new Administration emphasizes strengthening economic and security relationships with countries in Eurasia, in particular in Central Asia. Economic growth in Central Asia is on a steady rise, owing to the development of natural resources as the leading source of Central Asia’s rapid economic growth. However, industrial diversification, infrastructure improvement, technological development, good governance, and other strategic goals have yet to be achieved. Thus, it is recommended that governments and research institutions in Central Asia consider and analyze Korea’s development strategies and experiences as one of several useful benchmarks for steady and inclusive growth. This workshop is designed to foster a lasting and mutually beneficial partnership and facilitate cooperation among Korea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.
