Analysis of innovation activities in Korean service industry and policy implications

However, as the shift to the service economy and the extension of value areas in firms moves from technological areas to non-technological areas, there are inevitably problems in these new innovations activities in that they are not viewed as equal to technological innovation. First, there are limits to analyzing innovations in the service industry as technological innovations have traditionally focused on manufacturing. Service fir m s have a business based on offering intangible properties and non-technological innovations. It is these intangible properties that directly affect their competitiveness. Second, technological innovations are not sufficient to explain all innovations as these activities are simply to introduce and develop new technologies, but not to re-establish business strategies, internal organizations, external networks and marketing activities. Third, the integration of innovation among the product, process and organization is very important in order to succeed in the market. Consequently, technological innovations, which favor the manufacturing
industry, are limited when analyzing innovation in the service industry. Competitiveness and performance in the service industry increase when nontechnological innovations, such as a new marketing channel, as well as technological innovations are considered together.
