The empirical results show that the share of exports and employment/ production have a positive relationship, that the high share of imported inter mediate inputs are related to the low share of employment and production, that the high share of exports of ICT products increases the share of production, while it decreases the share of employment, and that the trade surplus with China increases the share of employment.
1. Introduction
Inspecting characteristics of the recent industrial structure defined as the share of production and/or employment in Korea, those are summarized as the increased share of production, i.e., value-added in the manufacture, and the increased share of employment in the service industry. The share of production measured as the real value-added has increased from 20% to 35% for the period of 1980-2007 in the manufacture, while that has decreased from 67% to 54% in the service industry.
It would be desirable that the increased real production is due to the increased labor productivity in the manufacture. There exists, however, a possibility of structural unemployment since the share of employment decreases rapidly. Moreover, the long-run production capability could be decreased because the rapid increase in the share of employment can cause the low labor productivity in the service industry.
