economists since 2004. However the evaluation of the economic impact of M&A activities on the Korean economy should be examined first before we move our focus to global M&A activities. In this paper, we study the effects of M&A activity on the Korean economy. For this purpose, first, we investigate the trends in the M&A market after the financial-crisis in Korea. Then, we conduct an empirical test to find out how this development of the M&A market has affected the Korean economy on an industry level. Finally, we discuss policy implications for M&A activities as industrial policy, based on our empirical results.
2. Trends in the M&A Market
(1) The Trends in Worldwide M&A Activities
The worldwide M&A market has grown tremendously since 2004, with its total transaction value increasing to $38 trillion in 2006. This boom is called“the sixth M&A wave.”In 2006, the number of M&A deals in U.S. reached 25,000,

and the total value of these deals reached $2.8 trillion. The ratio of total M&A value to GDP was over 8% for developed countries such as U.S., England, France and Germany.
