Status of and policies for women-owned SMEs in Korea

Frame of Image in the service sector, the productivity gap has widened between corporate service companies and hospitality businesses such as restaurants and lodging facilities where female participation levels are relatively high. On the other hand, Korean consumer spending patterns show an increasing level of diversification, quality product preference and personalization based on increased income levels and the increasing proportion of senior citizens. Accordingly, the Korean economy transitioned from the ‘heavy, thick, long and bulky’product industries of the 1970’s and 1980’s to‘light, thin, short and miniature’product industries in the 1990’s. We expect to see a trend towards ‘beautiful, sensitive, soft and creative’product industries into the 21st century. In the future, women-owned SMEs are expected to play a significant role to overcome limits of male-centered industrial development, to take part actively in economic activities that can maximize the merits of females and to successfully meet the new demands that favor‘beautiful, sensitive, soft and creative’ products in this century. Active growth of women-owned SMEs in Korea is expected to result in increased growth potential of the national economy, resolution of the increasing economic polarization, creation of new knowledgebased industries and generation of new job opportunities. At a time of increasing importance of womenowned SMEs in Korea, this paper discusses the status, problems, reality and characteristics of women-owned
