- Comparisons with the U.S and Japan the amount of imported products that can be exchanged with export unit. T h u s , an improvement(deterioration) in the terms of trade increases (decreases) the real income and economic welfare of a given country, ceteris paribus. In a small open economy, with a high trade dependency, it may be appropriate to reflect this kind of change in terms of trade in order to measure labor productivity of an industry. That is to say, GDI per labor unit may be more appropriate than GDP per labor, as shown in existing studies, as an index for a measurement of labor productivity of an industry. This manuscript estimates and compares industrial labor productivity based on GDI among Korea, the US, and Japan. Furthermore, by means of a shift-share analysis, we analyzed how the aggregate growth in labor productivity based on GDI is linked to differential growth of labor productivity based on GDI and the reallocation of labor between industries. In existing studies, it is difficult to find out the study which estimates the industrial labor productivity and implements the decomposition analysis on the basis of GDI
