2) Number of birth according to sex The sex ratio at birth is a significant index in determining the status of women in Korea since there has always been a cultural preference for a male child. In the past 30 years, the lowest sex ratio at birth is 105.3 in 1980 and the highest is 116.5 in 1990. The reason for the disparity in the sex ratios at birth in 1980 and 1990 can be explained through the sex ratios at birth by birth order. There is no remarkable difference in the sex ratios at birth by birth order in 1980: the sex ratio at birth of the first child, second child, third child, and fourth child are 106.0, 106.5, 106.9, and 110.2, respectively.
