Abstract

Thanks to its abundant natural resources, Kazakhstan has achieved rapid economic growth since 2000. However, like most resource-based economies, Kazakhstan’s economy was hit hard by the global financial crisis in 2008. The country’s economy has become more dependent on mineral energy resources than in the past, while the growth of manufacturing has been decreasing. This problem can be reaffirmed in the enterprise structure. In terms of the number of entities, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) account for 94% of all enterprises in Kazakhstan, but in terms of output, SMEs only account for 31.7% of GDP. The average number of persons employed per SME is just 1.9, and only 3% of SMEs in Kazakhstan are engaged in the manufacturing sector. (The rest omitted)
