Abstract

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a renowned UK economic research institute, chose Uzbekistan as one of the top ten countries expected to grow fast in 2011. According to an announcement by the State Statistics Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan's GDP was US$ 37.7 billion (61.831 billion soums) in 2010, which is 8.5% up from the previous year, and regarding the country’s GDP in 2000 the figure is almost twice as much compared to ten years ago. In particular, given the fact that Russia and most CIS (Commonwealth of Independent State) countries recorded negative economic growth rates after the global financial crisis in 2009, it is surprising that Uzbekistan has maintained high growth rates of 8% since 2007.
