Abstract

When it was liberated from Belgium in 1960, the DRC had a higher per capita GDP than South Africa. The DRC has a territory 23 times larger than that of South Korea; half of the world’s cobalt reserves; abundant underground resources including 25% of the global diamond reserves, copper and nickel; the world’s second largest tropical forest and its timber; and 50% of Africa’s water resources, earning it high recognition as Africa’s most promising country. However, the country almost collapsed due to the long dictatorship of the Mobutu government and the civil war. President Joseph Kabila, who drove the dictatorial government and established the transitional government, put an end to this period of chaos, and was elected President through the nation’s first direct election in 2006.
