Abstract

A major factor in Korea’s remarkable economic development is its outstanding human resources development and vocational training policies, both of which have played a critical role in industrial development. In particular, a continuing increase in women’s participation in higher education since the 1970s has played a pivotal role in Korea’s economic development. With expansion of secondary education in the 1960s and 1970s, the number of women who enter the labor market has dramatically increased. In the 1980s and 1990s, the number of women receiving higher education grew, which led to a change in employment patterns for women. While most female workers had found jobs in the manufacturing industry in the past, women with higher education were likely to find white-collar, sales, and service jobs. Also, during this period, not only single women but also married women increased their participation in the labor market. (The rest omitted)
