Abstract

This research seeks to examine the Korean mining and manufacturing industries in accordance with the basic statistics obtained through the estimates gathered from the computerized census data of the mining and manufacturing industries for the periods 1968-73.
In April 1974, Korea started producing statistics of the country’s industrial capital stocks since April, 1974, its figures based on the census surveys of national wealth in from 1968 and the mining and manufacturing industries for the periods 1968 - 1973. The result of the work produced an industrial capital estimate for the periods 1968 - 1973. In producing the estimated values, the following data were used: the 1973 census survey of the mining and manufacturing industries, price ratio, durable years of industrial products and residual value in terms of percentage.
In 1963, the gross capital stock of the mining and manufacturing industries reached 6.6 billion won in the mining industry and 937.7 billion won in the manufacturing industry, both of which do not exceed the gross value. The net capital stock of the mining industry marked 22.6 billion won and 451.3 billion won in the manufacturing industry. Five years later in 1973, the amount increased to 132 billion won in the mining area, 59.9 billion won in the manufacturing area, recording a net capital estimate of 2 trillion and 391.5 billion won. The increase in the gross capital and the net capital estimate reflect the high growth of the manufacturing industry.
On the other hand, the industrial capital stock of the mining industry was 30.9% in 1968, which decreased to 25.8% in 1973. Furthermore, the changes found in the net and gross capital all point out to a the tendency to decreasedecreasing trend between 1968 and 1973. The primary reason behind this is the shifting focus of the industry from mining to manufacturing. In comparing the industry ownership for the year 1968, corporate ownership was at 4.36 billion won (66.1%) while individual ownership reached 22.4 billion won (33.9%). This also showed a great change as corporate ownership reached 100.48 billion won (79.5%) and individual ownership at 27.2 billion won (20.5%), which can also be inferred from the estimate.
