Recently, with the increasing pace of social change that used to
take place gradually, the family environment is also changing rapidly.
This change is progressing in a divided and complicated way unlike in
the past, bringing many uncertainties.
Nonetheless, the family related researches so far have focused on
fragmented and immediate future such as change in demography and
development of science and technologies. However, this approach has
limitation in understanding various patterns of future family
environment, which is changing in an inter-connected and complex
way. Therefore, this research attempted to understand various factors
that can form and lead the function, roles, and relationship of future
family, and look at the picture of future family brought by the
inter-connection of these factors. Fundamental causes that can have a major impact on the change in future family environment were drawn
through such process, and then the opportunities and problems of
future family environment were explored.
In this research, the fundamental causes for change in future family
environment included: low birthrate, aging population, increasing
economic insecurity, increasing women’s economic activities, increasing
welfare demand, converged development of science technologies.
These causes have a significant effect on the change of future family
environment by themselves and also interaction with other causes,
acting as a hub that connects other causes to one another. In this
research, these fundamental causes were analyzed based on
‘importance’ and ‘urgency,’ and drew 13 policy agenda that the
government will need to actively prepare.
