A free trade agreement between Korea and its major trading partners will usher in a new era of increased competition. This paper investigates implications of the FTA (Free Trade Agreement) for the Korean financial markets. With special attention to the financial service sectors such as banks, security dealers and insurance firms, this study discusses ways to upgrade financial markets and enhance firms' competitiveness in more open markets.
On December 21, 2006, the Korea Institute of Finance (KIF) hosted a conference entitled "The FTA and the Needs to Enhance the Competitiveness of Financial Firm." Since this research paper mainly focuses on financial sectors, it may be most useful for financial market participants. In order to share our suggestions with policy makers, financial institutions and other market participants, alike, we have included the presentations and discussions from this conference.
