International relations in the South Pacific and Korea’s diplomatic strategy

Frame of Image  addition, improving its relations with South Pacific island countries is expected to bring the Korean government one step closer to realizing its diplomatic vision, referred to as “Global Korea,” and also enable the country to successfully implement its so-called “New Asia Initiative.” The groupings of the South Pacific island countries are as follows: Melanesia (including Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, and Vanuatu), Micronesia (including Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Marshall Islands, and Kiribati), and Polynesia (including Tonga, Samoa, and Tuvalu). South Pacific island countries have maintained a relatively stable political condition, centering around their indigenous tribes, even with recent political instabilities in Fiji and Solomon Islands. Also, active regional cooperation is currently promoted through the mechanism called “Pacific Islands Forum(PIF).” Economically, those countries mostly rely on international assistance as they rank low in resources as well as the

industrial development. Also, their excessive reliance on foreign assistance have created a number of problems, such as corruption, diminished will for industrialization as well as the debate around the effectiveness of foreign aid.
