Korean Banks are attempting to expand abroad through cross-border M&A as the domestic market gets saturated. And many banks are expected to show up on the market as the fiscal crisis in Europe progresses. However, Korean banks' lack of experience in cross-border M&A may lead to the winner's curse.
This paper looks into the Korean banks cross-border M&A cases and lists drawbacks from the strategic point of view. Recent cross-border M&A experiences of RBS, Santander and Fortis are also analyzed to find strategic strengths and weaknesses. Finally, lessons are derived from case studies of recent cross-border M&A experiences of RBS, Santander and Fortis.
