Earned-Income Inequality in Korea, 1963-2010 Nak Nyeon Kim
This paper presents new homogeneous series of top income shares from 1963 to 2010 in Korea using earned income tax statistics. It also estimates decile income distribution for selected years by combining household survey and income tax data. Based on these estimates significant findings include the followings: (1) Income concentration showed no distinct rising or falling trend during the period of high growth from 1963 to 1985, but increased rapidly after the financial crisis in 1997. (2) From international comparative perspective, the income concentration of Korea, which was low similar to that of Japan, has been rapidly rising although it is still lower than that of the United States. It was affected by the performance-oriented compensation system which was widely adopted among conglomerates since the financial crisis. (3) The average income of each income group has showed different trend since the mid-1990s; rising, stagnant, and declining trends for the upper, middle, and lower income group respectively.
