◇ Urbanization - Urban population grew by 11.9% per year on average while the nation’s population grew by 3.4% between 1960 and 1990 - Urbanization rate: from 40.7%, ’70 to 80.9%, ’05 - Urbanization slowed down as the country’s economy matured, to 1.1% per year during ‘95 – ’00 and 0.6% during ‘05 – ’09 period ◇ Role of cities in modernization and economic growth - Localization and urbanization economies, scale and agglomeration economies - Large cities fuel economic development via mobilizing work force, capital, knowledge/information, and technology ◇ Korea’s industrialization/modernization - Absorption of labor and capital into cities → rapid urbanization - Closely correlated with economic development, with correlation coefficient of 0.887 - GDP grew 16 times, with growth rate of 9.4% per annum during ’70’09 period while urbanization rate doubled 40.7% to 81.9%, with a rate of growth 4.4% per annum
