response to their actions. An international forum attended by Kono, former chairman of the House of Representatives of Japan, and Yu Myung-hwan, former Foreign Minister of Korea, was held in Seoul in February of this year. The 45th Korea-Japan Business Conference was held in Seoul in late April. Furthermore, the first meeting to discuss FTA negotiations among Korea, China and Japan took place in Seoul from March 26 to 28 this year. The three countries’FTA negotiations are likely to have considerable difficulties until settlement because of huge opinion gaps. However, the meeting of these three countries itself holds significance considering their territorial disputes over the Senkaku and the Dokdo Islands. The matter surrounding the sovereignty of the Dokdo Islands can be a huge risk factor to stimulate nationalism, further complicated by war sex slaves and history related issues. Therefore, the new governments of both countries will need to gather wisdom to prevent political and diplomatic friction from adversely affecting economic and industrial cooperation between them. This paper aims to provide an overview of current industrial cooperation between the two countries and suggest directions for its expansion and changes in pattern.
