The steel industry is characterized by having a derived demand due to its demand determined by the production activities in the industries using steel as a factor of production such as the automotive, machinery and construction industry. Simultaneously, the productivity and competitiveness of the steel demand industries depend on tability of steel supply and speed and capability of development in technology and product of steel industry.
As sophistication of industrial structure is accelerated, the growth of steel demand in South Korea has slowed since the 2000s, and that of global steel demand is expected to be lowered by the end of China’s rapid growth. Besides, as the use of alternative materials to steel such as nonferrous metals, ceramics, carbon composite materials, etc. is increasing, the intensity of steel use in the steel demand industries is declining gradually.
This paper aims to conduct in-depth analysis of current situation and projections in terms of transition on steel demand through analyzing the change of competitive circumstances in the key steel demand industries, focusing on the automotive and shipbuilding industry. (The rest is omitted)
