This study aims to evaluate the Act on the Registration, etc. of Family Relationship (hereinafter referred to as the “Family Relationship Registration Act”), a personal status registration system that records, accumulates, and notifies the changes of personal status of people, as well as to review its implementation and draw up improvement plans, five years after its enforcement.
Replacing the rules on the patriarchal family system in the Civil Act abolished in 2005, the Family Relationship Registration Act took effect from 2007. Accordingly, this research aims to analyze relevant cases accumulated since the enforcement of the act, discover barriers to the implementation of the system, and draw up improvement plans toward a more desirable future of the system where changing aspects of the family and society can be reflected.
