According to the population and housing census carried out in Korea in 2010, the number of elderly single person households stood at 1.066 million, accounting for 25.7% of the single person households in the country as a whole. The 2013 statistics on the elderly suggest that the elderly single person households account for 6.9% of all households in the country. These indicate that the number of elderly single person households is on the rise in Korea and it is necessary to provide care services for them.
Accordingly, the government has put into practice various policies aimed at providing care services for the aged, such as the Total Elderly Care Service, Basic Elderly Care Service and Long-term Care Insurance for the Elderly. These care service systems, however, are targeting elderly people with physical disabilities. However, only a small number of the elderly have physical disabilities; in reality, the number of the elderly who need help or feel lonely in daily life is rising and their demand for relevant services is growing steadily.
