◇ Urbanization - Between ‟60 and „90 urban population grew by 11.9% per year on average while the total population grew by 3.4%; it grew from 40.7% in ‟70 to 91% in ‟12 . The rate declined as the country‟s economy matured, from 1.1% during ‟95–‟00 to 0.6% during ‟05–‟09 and estimated to be .3% during „10-‟15 ◇ Role of cities in modernization and economic growth - Generated localization and urbanization economies, scale and agglomeration economies in production, distribution, marketing and consumption - Large cities fueled economic development via mobilizing work force, capital, knowledge/information, and technology ◇ Korea‟s industrialization/modernization - Absorption of labor and capital into cities → rapid urbanization → ‘compressed economic growth’; urbanization correlated with economic development, with correlation coefficient of 0.887 . GDP grew 16 times or 9.4% per annum during ‟70-‟09 while urban population doubled from 40.7% to 87.9% or 4.4
