Abstract

There has been a surge of international activity in retailing since the late 1980s as West European and American discount stores including hypermarkets and category killers have pushed internationalization as the basis of their growth strategies. East Asia has become one of the major destinations of internationalization for such firms especially after the mid 1990s. Rapid growth of middle income consumers, under development of efficient retail formats, and particularly deregulated market environments caused by a recent Asian economic crisis seem to constitute pulling factors for the recent entry of Western retail firms into Asian markets.
