Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon of deindustrialization from various points of view, focusing on the factors which influence it, and to examine the case of the Korean economy. Section Ⅱ of this paper outlines the definition, main characteristics and theoretical background of deindustrialization. Section Ⅲ tries to analyze those factors influencing the process of deindustrialization and the interrelationship among them. Section Ⅳ examines the case of deindustrialization in Korea. Finally, Section Ⅴ summarizes the discussions and introduces some policy implications, for the economy undergoing deindustrialization, to better cope with the probable negative effects, such as an increase in unemployment and a deterioration of the manufacturing balance of trade.
