Policies for the Sustainable Growth of the Korean Economy
■
Theoretical discussions on the relationship between the real and financial sectors have generally found that the development of one spurs the development of the other.
	 ○ Financial industry development performs the functions of monitoring, diversifying risk, and providing information to facilitate investment and raise the efficiency of the allocation of resources, in turn stimulating growth in the real economy. 	 ○ Financial institutions discourage companies’ moral hazard through closer monitoring and by improving governance structures, which also has a positive impact on real growth. 	 ○ The channel by which real economic growth follows from financial industry development is, however, naturally better seen through empirical rather than theoretical investigation.
