The 2014 nuclear security summit and the roles of the Republic of Korea

This is the largest summit meeting in the field of international security, and is also the largest summit ever held in Washington, Seoul, and Hague. The 2012 Nuclear Security Summit (NSS), hosted in Seoul, represents the best example of Korea’s contribution to the global efforts to promote international peace and security. The summit was also significant in that Korea played a leading role in establishing global governance in the field of nuclear security, thereby firmly placing itself as a “leading middle power”. While Korea’s contribution to the drive for world peace has not been able to keep up with its economic standing, ranked as the world’s tenth largest economy, the Seoul NSS provided an opportunity for Korea to be recognized for its contribution to

global peace and security, and to rise as a middle power in its own right. Meanwhile, closer to home, the 2012 Seoul NSS received little attention from the public due to the fact that the North Korean nuclear issue and nuclear safety―the primary interests of the Korean people―were excluded from the summit’s agenda. Nevertheless, it was an occasion for Korea to reflect on its roles and contributions regarding an even greater cause: the peace and prosperity of the global community.
