NATO's partners across the globe and the ROK-NATO cooperation

Frame of Image  its internal desire to become a leading player in the international community. It was in this vein that Korea’s partnership with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) began. After joining as one of the “Contact Countries” of NATO in 2006, the Republic of Korea has been expanding its cooperation with the organization as one of NATO’s “Partners across the Globe,” often simply referred to as “global partners.” Relations between NATO and Korea began in 2005, when then Minister of Foreign Affairs of Korea Ban Ki-moon paid a visit to NATO headquarters in Brussels, during which he delivered an address at the North Atlantic Council (NAC) and met with the NATO Secretary-General. Following the visit, the Korea-NATO cooperation has deepened with the holding of the Korea-NATO annual High-Level Policy Consultation meetings in 2008, and Korea’s participation in the NATO-led International Security Forces

(ISAF) to Afghanistan in 2010. The political status of the partnership was further promoted as Korea signed the Individual Partnership Cooperation Program (IPCP) with NATO in 2012, and NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen visited Korea in April 2013, which was a first-ever visit by a NATO Secretary-General. As the Korea-NATO partnership has evolved as part of the partners across the globe, a comprehensive assessment as well as forecast of these partnerships would be necessary so as to determine the course of the Korea-NATO partnership in the future.
