3. Political and Diplomatic Effects of the ROK-China FTA
It seems that China is actively seeking FTAs for several reasons. First, it is concerned with U.S. and Japan-led TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) as well as other regional integration initiatives. Second, China vies to expand the influence of Pan-Chinese economic community. Third, it plans to establish a bridgehead to enter into strategic markets in the world. Fourth, China also plans to improve diplomatic relations with other countries in the region. Korea and China needs to widen the areas of mutual contact and exchange—economic, security cooperation, and etc. Since more frequent bilateral and multilateral exchanges are needed, ROK-China FTA can be an important cooperation mechanism in which the two countries can mitigate existing tensions.
