Abstract
Official statistics played an important role in Korea’s immense development. However, the Korean Statistical System began with many problems. One of the largest issues was that there were not enough statistical resources to carry out the necessary functions. The Korean Statistical System is decentralized, and its development stage is comprised of improving the problems of having a decentralized system and finding solutions for the shortage of statistical resources. Since the Financial Crisis of 1997, Korea has established remarkable development plans. Efforts to improve the system include incorporating more characteristics of a centralized statistical system, the merger of statistical agencies, the introduction of a statistical quality assessment program, strengthening of statistical coordination, and introduction of a sponsored survey system. The characteristics and development story of the Korean Statistical System can serve as an important resource for developing countries that wish to establish or improve their own statistical system.
