The outstanding characteristics of Korea’s natural resource consumption are the extremely high dependency on imported resources and rapid growth, thus resulting in the increasing natural resource
intensity of the economy. Furthermore, the amount of natural resource used for one unit GDP is still higher than those in advanced economies, and the ratios of natural resource import to total import and to GDP are still increasing. The purpose of this paper is to review current natural resource policy and to search for additional policy directions toward less resource-intensive economy. For this purpose, we reviewed the position of natural resource in Korea’s economy using various statistics, studied the impact of international price shocks on the Korean economy by input-output analysis, reviewed the natural resource policies in Korea and advanced economies, and searched for additional policy directions toward less resource-intensive economy.
