Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the responses of higher education institutions
in South Korea to the mega-trend of internationalization.
Methodology: A multi-case comparative study method was implemented to investigate the responses of four Korean universities to internationalization. Those universities were selected to represent institutions of the Korean higher education sector based on their organizational size, prestige and rankings, as well as their geographical location. Data for the analysis was collected from various documents, while observations and interviews were conducted through multiple on-site visits. Qualitative case analysis and cross-case analysis were implemented.
Findings: In this cross-case study, it was found that institutional conditions such as size, location, governance structure, leadership style determined the way individual higher education institutions defined internationalization and formed their strategic responses to it. (The rest omitted)
