Abstract

This study analyzes the effect of the Seoul Olympic Games on Korea.
Despite its constraints as a divided, developing nation, Korea held the Seoul Olympic Games successfully, and achieved more than expected diplomatically, by enhancing the image of Korea and raising its status in the global community. The Seoul Olympic Games allowed Korea to lay the foundation to expand diplomatic relationships with various non-aligned or neutral nations, as well as the nations without diplomatic ties with Korea.
However, North Korea not only declined to participate in the Seoul Olympic Games, but sabotaged the global event, further complicating its relationship with South Korea. Korea’s international status was enhanced with the Seoul Olympic Games, while North Korea became yet more isolated. Such a gap between the international status of the two Koreas could prompt North Korea to engage diplomatically and to be more flexible, ultimately resulting in creating a better environment for the improvement of the relationship between the two Koreas.
One unexpected negative effect of the Seoul Olympics was partial damage to the Korea-United States relationship. The U.S. made a concerted effort towards the participation of communist nations, such as the Soviet Union and China, for the success of the Seoul Olympics, and supported Korea’s safe hosting of the event. However, the NBC TV Network, which had the exclusive rights to cover the Seoul Olympics, sparked anti-US sentiment with biased reporting. Korean friendliness to Olympic athletes from communist countries and hostility towards American athletes provoked the American people, causing unprecedented animosity.
The Seoul Olympic Games carries great meaning in that it played a decisive role in unite all Korean society and inspired their patriotism and sense of cooperation. Also, the Seoul Olympic Games urged Koreans to see their culture and art in a fresh light through the culture and art festival. The opening and closing ceremonies drew global attention to Korean culture.
The Seoul Olympic Games, an exemplary event in which the world united, drove the advancement of the Korean economy. Above all, it is viewed as an economic event that did not much burden the Korean people. The economic effect of the Olympic Games is viewed as quantitative rather than qualitative, and intangible yet positive rather than direct and tangible.
