A development cooperation paradigm is important in that it defines developmental goals and policies for the international community in order to achieve development in developing countries, and thus has a real impact on the lives of people in developing countries. Besides the general significance of a development paradigm, the SDGs are notable for the fact that they have been formulated through international agreements as the MDGs were. The MDGs were the first, though imperfect, international consensus on common goals and actions to be pursued in the domain of development, and have been evaluated as the most effective paradigm for poverty reduction.
