Abstract
This paper examines the effect of exporting on plants' productivity and product churning behavior, utilizing a plant-product matched dataset from the Korean manufacturing sector in the 1980s. We find that exporting increases plant productivity only in the year of export market entry. There is only weak evidence that exporting promotes product adding and dropping. These results are in contrast with a previous study which finds that those effects are much more significant and robust in the 1990s. One explanation for the contrasting results is that the role of R&D has become more important over the decades in linking export participation on one hand and productivity and product innovation on the other. We find some evidence supportive of this explanation.
