Abstract

Myanmar, which was in the 1960s a major rice exporter and one of the most promising economies in Southeast Asia, has since greatly fallen behind in the region in socioeconomic development. The country has failed to translate its enormous potential into socioeconomic development because of an inability - both institutional and technological - to utilize opportunities to benefit society. Myanmar remains an agro- and resource-based economy with a per capita GDP of around US$900, one of the lowest in Southeast Asia. A more serious reality is that a quarter of the population lives below the national poverty line. The country’s disappointing economic performance is attributable to a diversity of causes, but many seem to blame fundamental factors such as macroeconomic instability, insufficient energy and transport infrastructure, weak capacity for technological absorption and lack of a well-functioning financial system.
