Abstract

Despite the prolonged recession in global markets, Uzbekistan has maintained quite impressive economic performances in recent years. With rapid and stable GDP growth at hand, the government of Uzbekistan has successfully managed macroeconomic conditions, including modest inflationary pressure, state budget surplus as well as external trade surplus. As Uzbekistan is emerging from a lower middle-income country toward an upper middle-income one, the government of Uzbekistan faces various policy challenges that are needed to be tackled with. As President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov emphasized at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers early this year, the foremost task of Uzbekistan would be the modernization and diversification of the economy. It is imperative to develop and support production capacities, which have high competitiveness in external market and serve as stimulus for further development and modernization of economy.
