Preface
The government of Kim Jong Un, launched in April 2012, is now facing its fifth year. Under the Kim administration for the last 4 years, North Korea has pursued nuclear development alongside economic development in order to attain economic stability and strengthen the regime. The political change in North Korea has affected the entire Northeast Asian region, including the Korean Peninsula. This “2016 DPRK Country Report,” which is in its third year, aims to suggest more proper policy towards North Korea and help restore the South-North Korean relations by evaluating the continuity and change in North Korea and its prospects in the coming year. As North Korea celebrated its 70th anniversary of the founding of Worker’s Party of Korea (WPK) in 2015, it would be especially valuable to closely reassess the prospects of the Northeast Asian region in 2016 and identify future-oriented measures to facilitate peaceful reunification of the two Koreas by conducting a comprehensive investigation and analysis of North Korea's politics, economics, social and cultural environment, foreign policy, and the military in the year of 2015.
