The prime concern of development theory since its beginnings in the 1950s had been the economic growth and social changes in developing countries. In the wake of the de-colonization process, several genres of theoretical approaches attempted to understand and interpret the momentous changes taking place in postcolonial societies. These approaches are cast within widely differing technological, political, economic and social paradigms. The techno-determinist models highlighted the role of capital accumulation and technical changes as integrative indicators of economic growth. The political economic approaches emphasized the role of transmuted international economic and technological division of labor and the specific linkages and positions of developing countries within the order as playing a fundamentally determining influence in the processes of development and underdevelopment. The paradigms that based their analytical understanding of development on the social dimensions of governance and distributive justice looked closely into the internal dynamics of economic and technological policies and practic
