IT products, e.g. personal computers and servers consume huge amounts of energy, contributing to the emission of CO2. According to the estimate by Gartner in 2007, IT goods and services account for approximately 2% of global CO2 emissions, a figure equivalent to that of the aviation industry. On the other hand, IT has a great potential to provide environment solutions that make a remarkable contribution in reducing energy consumption as well as CO2 emission, e.g. e-government services, videoconference, intelligent transportation system (ITS), and building energy management system (BEMS). The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) estimates IT is able to reduce up to 25% of CO2 emissions. Against this backdrop, advanced nations around the globe are making every effort to reduce CO2 emissions by utilizing IT. Moreover, they are exerting efforts to develop technologies and policies aiming to eliminate CO2 emitted by IT goods and services.
