Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between urban design and traffic safety and to propose regulatory alternatives to improve urban environment by utilizing the factors of urban design for traffic safety. This study, first of all, clarifies the necessity of connection between urban design and traffic safety. The Korean government has been focusing on the improvement of physical structure on roads as points. But it is expected to focus on physical environment as macro areas rather than micro points. It also provides the results of an analysis on the trends of empirical studies which have dealt with the relationship between traffic safety and urban design. Planning of physical environment such as the change of land use can fundamentally bring the reduction of traffic accidents. (The rest omitted)
