Foreword
Since its independence in 1945, the Republic of Korea has achieved a remarkable and unprecedented economic growth. Over the past 70 years, Korean agriculture has contributed to the nation’s industrialization and economic growth by playing the most important role of supplying food stably, and has continued to grow by converting from food crop to commercial crop production in response to changes in demand for agricultural and livestock products. Despite the inevitable contraction of agriculture in the process of rapid economic development, the growth and sacrifice of agriculture and rural communities, including poverty eradication, labor supply, and price stabilization, can be evaluated to have become a foundation for high industrialization and urbanization.
