Abstract

The structural changes in the world economy, including the international division of labor, transboundary movement of production factors coupled with low birth rate trends and population ageing, will likely diminish the growth potential of the Korean economy in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. In particular, the prolonged trends of population aging and slow growth⋅low interest rates can result in fundamental changes in economic agents’ asset allocation decision-making, and have a significant impact on the system-wide risk management of the overall economy as well as individual economic agents. With regards to the life cycle of individual economic agents, population aging could either lead to an increase in the senior population’s savings rate as a result of the prolonged longevity of economic agents or a decrease based on a higher elderly dependency ratio. Nevertheless, these problems will require improvements in the private pension system, and increase the need to protect the interests of senior consumers. (The rest omitted)
