Introduction
1. Background and Objectives
1.1. Background
The official name of Bangladesh is the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Situated close to the Bay of Bengal, the country stretches over 144,000km2 and has a population of 153.6 million as of 2013. Nearly 78% of the population is engaged in agriculture and the country has limited industrial capacity (Rahman & Bashar, 2013).1) With high population density, Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, lacks proper urban infrastructure in energy, transport and water. In particular, since there are insufficient transport infrastructures, buses, passenger cars, and rickshaws are mixed with pedestrians on the road causing serious traffic congestion.
