The purpose of this study is to explore strategies to bolster Korean exports in the period following the global financial crisis. This study focuses on changes in the makeup of Korean exports.
First, we analyze recent post-crisis trends in global trade and de¬scribe the factors that have been transforming global trade. Trade ex¬pansion following the crisis has barely recovered the world economy having recaptured much of its former momentum. Among other fac¬tors, the erection of trade barriers across the world, the stagnation of GVCs, changes in China’s economic structure, and policy uncertain¬ties have contributed to slowing trade, and seem poised to continue to do so.
According to our analysis, Korea is exporting a smaller variety of goods to a shrinking number of countries, though overall sales vol¬umes remain strong. This trend has long been evident but has con¬tinued to intensify since the crisis. In addition, Korea’s export ratio of intermediate goods is continuously increasing, all while the global export ratio of intermediate goods remains stagnant or decreases.
