Servicification is the global industrial trend that emphasizes the growing importance of services in the economy. As the share of the service sector in the employment and value added of the national economy continues to increase, the role of international trade in ser¬vices is also gaining in importance.
Statistics on international trade in services are crucial since they can be productively utilized as resources for research on the service in¬dustry and trade, and give credibility to research findings and conclu¬sions. They are also used as evidence in support of trade and indus¬trial policy making.
But unlike statistics on the international trade of goods, the statistics on trade in services are woefully incomplete. It is primarily because the data of trade in services are very difficult to accurately collect and manage due to the intangible nature of services and the fact that tariffs on services are not levied as they are on goods.
The purpose of this research report is to explore the status of the international trade in services of Korea and examine issues in service trade statistics, such as inconsistencies in trade data, Foreign Affiliates Trade Statistics (FATS), and building a dataset of international trade in services using the GATS mode of supply and at the firm level. It also suggests policy options to improve the measuring and collecting of statistics of the international trade in services.
